What is the purpose of ventilation?
First, we need to understand that ventilation is a system of intake and exhaust.
Attic ventilation is essential to your home for several reasons. For starters, it makes for a cooler attic in the summertime, keeping your home cooler and, in turn, cutting your air conditioning costs. In the winter, attic ventilation drastically reduces moisture and heat buildup in the attic, which can lead to water condensation under your roof and subsequent wood rot, mould and mildew buildup, and failure of your roofing material. In short, proper attic ventilation is a must, and good ventilation starts with a properly positioned combination of both intake and exhaust vents.
This diagram displays an example of optimal ventilation. Intake vents are installed at the roof's lowest point, while the exhaust vents are installed at the roof's peak (North or West facing if solar-powered).
Intake vents permit fresh air to be drawn into the attic while the exhaust vents expel hot and humid air.
